New update Nokia Belle FP1 for Nokia 701, 700 and 603

Nokia today launched update Nokia Belle Feature Pack 1 for Nokia 701, Nokia 700 and Nokia 603. The new firmware is released as the OTA, and includes such features as a supplement to the home screen widgets, improved line of notifications, updated version of the browser (8.2), improved multitasking functionality of Dolby Digital Plus and overclock the CPU from 1.0 GHz to 1.3 GHz.

NEWS|NOKIA|Is this Nokia Lumia PureView? We hope not

What we have for you here are two leaked slides, which allegedly show a concept design and the actual specs of the upcoming Nokia Lumia PureView. It should be the Windows Phone twin of the Symbian-based 808 PureView.

According to those slides, the Lumia PureView should pack a 4.3-inch HD screen, a dual-core 1.5GHz Krait processor, Adreno 320 graphics, a 41MP camera sensor – same as on the Nokia 808 PureView with 1080p video recording and Windows Phone Apollo ticking inside.

Well, the specs sound quite right for a next generation WP flagship and Nokia would certainly be bringing the PureView technology to its Lumia range, but that design is plain ugly. We know that the huge sensor mandates a thicker profile, but that's just ridiculous.

We really hope that, if these slides are indeed real, Nokia will choose a different design for its Lumia PureView smartphone.

The new update to MeeGo on the N9 has been available since last week, and now we have some details on what exactly has been added.

The most notable is the introduction of the Google Talk Video Call app, which is the first app to take advantage of the N9′s front-facing camera for video. You can also show the person at the other end of the call what you’re seeing by simultaneously turning on the rear-facing 8MP shooter.

Also, thanks to the new continuous shutter featuer, you are able to snap up to nine pictures in quick succession by holding down the capture button. Finally, Nokia’s face recognition technology is able to tag your friends in your photos and upload them to your social networking sites.

Nokia Drive now allows you to adjust your routing options so you can avoid traffic or toll roads, and you can also sync with your favorite locations on maps.nokia.com. It can also tell you if you’re speeding, if you’re to be in an unfamiliar area, for instance.

Other cool improvements include wireless media sharing to select TV’s and game consoles, 3rd part app update notifications, improved media management, improved web browsing capabilities, as well as support for five additional languages: Vietnamese, Thai, Persian, Hebrew and Kazakh.

At the time of this writing, the update should be available OTA WiFi to over 70% of all N9 handsets, with full implementation expecting over the coming weeks.

A PureView camera headed to the Lumia lineup soon

A few days ago the Nokia 808 PureView caused a lot of jaws to drop, only to be raised back up again to ask "wait, Symbian?" However, when you take into account that the PureView project started 5 years ago the things become clear - Windows Phone just didn’t exist back then.

Jo Harlow, Executive Vice President of smart devices at Nokia, spoke to a Finnish newspaper saying that the PureView technology is heading to a future Lumia phone. According to her, it shouldn't be too long before such a phone materializes.

Performance shouldn't be an issue - the Nokia 808 uses a single-core 1.3GHz processor with 512MB and it's a custom chip that does all the heavy lifting. That's well within reach of current WP7 phones though they'll have to adjust the processing for a Qualcomm platform.

But, of course, that doesn’t mean a Nokia Lumia PureView phone is just around the corner.

Nokia Drive update enables offline route planning, Transport app enters beta

Nokia revamped their mapping apps for their Windows Phone handsets and added one more app to the list of Lumia-exclusive apps. Nokia Drive has gained full offline functionality and is joined by the new app, Nokia Transport, so you can navigate a city with public transport instead of a car.

Nokia Drive for Windows Phone had one big problem at launch – it couldn’t plot a route in offline mode (even if you have downloaded the map for the region). The latest update fixes that and adds other improvements.

It enables Speed limit alerts, which will notify you if you go over the road’s sped limit. Another addition is the option to display different info in the app’s dashboard – time of arrival, time until arrival or distance to destination.

Nokia Transport allows users to plan routes to any destination in a given town using the public transport available (busses, trams, metro or suburban trains). It will also include walking destination to the first bus stop (or metro station, etc.) and from the last stop to your final destination.

You can pin favorite destinations to the home screen, so you can quickly plan a route home (and also get at a glance departure info).

Transport is available in 270 cities in 45 countries. There’s timetable information for 86 of the cities – here’s the list.

Then there’s Nokia Maps, which is designed to help you explore a city on foot and also find something interesting to visit in the first place. The update will let you save favorite places, share locations over SMS, email or social networks (and those messages include your estimated time of arrival).

This is a great way to set up a meeting with your friends. They don’t even need to have Lumia phones, the info is shared in a way anyone can view.

The Nokia Drive and Nokia Maps update are coming in the next few weeks. If you have a Lumia but somehow don’t have these two apps installed, you can grab them from the Nokia section of the Windows Phone Marketplace.

[news]Windows Phone Marketplace expands, details about WP Tango emerge

Microsoft has been working hard in recent time to expand its Windows Phone reach. Evidence of this are the announcements of the entry level Nokia Lumia 610 and now the fact that the company is expanding its Marketplace to 23 more countries.

And here are the countries the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace is now available: Bahrain, Bulgaria, China, Costa Rica, Croatia, Estonia, Iceland, Iraq, Israel, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Qatar, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Thailand, Turkey, UAE, Ukraine, Venezuela and Vietnam. The new country additions make up a total of 63 markets where developers can sell their apps.

Windows Phone 7.5 Tango

Tango, as the new update to the Windows Phone 7 OS will be called, will hit devices in April. Mostly it brings support for Windows Phone with 256MB at the expense of few software restrictions.

“Restrictions?”, you may ask. With the announcement of the Nokia Lumia 610 yesterday, it got clear that Microsoft has worked hard to lower the minimum system requirements to bring more affordable WP7-running devices to emerging markets. The Lumia 610 is one example of such devices.

As a result, Tango will have to make some feature-cuts for devices with this low amount of RAM (compared to the 1GB beasts out there). For example, background agents taking care of doing background tasks in Tango on low-RAM devices will be turned off. Fortunately, this doesn’t include playing music while doing something else. Automatic uploads from SkyDrive and Bing Local Scout will too not be able to function.

At this point, not many of the new features are fully disclosed, but MMS ones are among the chief of them. Microsoft has added the ability to add video snippets to MMS messages, as well as voice recordings.

And to help developers a bit with testing their applications on low-end devices, Microsoft has released an update to the SDK for Windows Phone. Now, devs can emulate a 256MB of RAM environment and see how their apps cope with the sparse hardware resources.

[News]Nokia N9 runs Ice Cream Sandwich in Android port

Efforts to get Nokia’s N9 running Android look to be bearing fruit, with modders coaxing theMeeGo smartphone into loading Ice Cream Sandwich. The handiwork of Alexey Roslyakov, theNITDroid project builds on earlier work porting Android to the Nokia N900, though there’s not yet a public release or guidance on how you can get your own N9 to dual-boot between the platforms.

The N9 was launched to much fanfare last year, though Nokia quickly shifted its attention to Windows Phone and its deal with Microsoft. That’s despite strong reviews – ours included - and a very positive reception to MeeGo itself. Development of the OS has now been pushed over into Tizen, while Nokia has said it will use its own work on MeeGo back in the R&D labs to tinker with next-gen devices.

Where MeeGo lacks the bulk of third-party apps, however, Android does not, and for some the polycarbonate 3.9-inch smartphone would deliver the best of both worlds running each OS. At present, pressing the volume-up button during boot automatically loads up Android rather than MeeGo.

Progress is being partially documented over at Maemo.org, though it seems getting the N9′s hardware to work with the functional Android kernel on the handset has caused the most headaches. There’s also ongoing issues with getting OpenGL to work, without which the whole thing is unusable. Still, we’re hoping efforts continue speedily, as this could be just the excuse we need to give in and grab an N9 ourselves.

Nokia 803 is rumored to have the largest camera sensor to date

A new batch of rumored specs has emerged for Nokia's yet to be announced 803 Symbian smartphone. The device will likely be the last phone running the OS to come from Nokia.

Reportedly, the Nokia 803 will feature a 4" AMOLED screen - not the 3.5" unit, which we've stumbled upon before. HDMI port, NFC connectivity and microSIM slot complete the rumored specs.

Most importantly however, the last Symbian handset is rumored to feature the largest camera sensor to date. Add to this the suspected optical zoom and we might end up seeing one of the greatest camera phones on the market.

Nokia 803 is expected to be released sometimes in May. Don't be surprised however, if the device is Nokia's major announcement at MWC.

Nokia wants to give up from wired interface

An interesting conversation came from the journalists British newspaper the Guardian and the new head of design, Nokia Antissari Marco (Marko Antissari). It turns out that the Finnish manufacturer is dreaming of is to completely abandon the wired interfaces on branded smartphones. Of course, this will happen not once, but the right direction of development is already planned.

Mr. Antissari noted that in the near future, Nokia will release a series of smartphones Lumia without plugs on port micro USB, which is used for charging and PC synchronization.
